Crossway

Yesterday we considered a blog post from Justin Taylor of Crossway. Do you know much about Crossway?

Crossway is the publishing house that published the The Holy Bible, English Standard Version, used throughout the LCMS and almost all newer synodical materials. From their About page:

The purpose of Crossway has been, from its founding as a not-for-profit ministry in 1938, to publish gospel-centered, Bible-centered content that will honor our Savior and serve his Church. We seek to help people understand the massive implications of the gospel and the truth of God’s Word, for all of life, for all eternity, and for the glory of God.

Or, as it was written in our 1979 mission statement:

Crossway is a not-for-profit Christian ministry and exists solely for the purpose of proclaiming the gospel through publishing and other means in order, by God’s grace:

  • To bring men, women, and children to Christ as their Lord and Savior
  • To help individual Christians and the church grow in knowledge and understanding of the Christian life;
  • To bear witness to God’s truth, beauty, and holiness, and to the Lordship of Christ in every area of life; and
  • To glorify our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in every way.

Any surplus that may arise shall be used solely to further the ministry and shall not inure to the benefit of any individual.

It may not be Lutheran, but it is certainly Lutheran-friendly. They have published eight of Gene Veith’s books, including several of his most popular titles: God at Work, Postmodern Times, Reading between the Lines, and—a personal favorite—Loving God with All Your Mind. (Ok, ok. I don’t actually know that those are among his most popular, but aren’t they?)

Anyway, as I get a chance, I’ll try to introduce you to a few more publishing houses. (Requests are welcome, as always.)
