Type 1

You’re pardon me if I don’t tend to push blogs. Blogs are fine. I read ’em, though I read fewer than I used to. Still, I’d like to mention one today: Type 1 Confessional. It’s a new blog written by an author and LCMS pastor, Rev. Christopher Thoma, whose young daughter has recently been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes.

Rev. Thoma has a very enjoyable writing style. Several of his books are on my husband’s Amazon wish list for Christmas this year. 🙂 He typically blogs whisky reviews at Angels’ Portion. Still, I particularly admire what he writes on this newer, more intimate blog.

I, for one, am not Jacob. I need words to wrestle with God. Writing those words out where I can see them, alter and variously tweak them, is part of that, as I search for clarity in both what I wish to say and what I wish to receive by God’s grace.

As someone who values written prayers, and writing prayers, I appreciate what Pastor Thoma is doing. He is offering a service for himself and for others by letting us hear some of his processing. And, His emphasis on God’s mercy despite the very real human struggle is refreshing, encouraging, and substantial. At the same time, he does not belittle his, her, and their suffering. He can’t. It’s SUFFERING.

I don’t know if you’ve been there. I don’t know if you’ve given much thought to the “invisible diseases” and those affected by them that are trying to break through collective silence right now. But I’d like to be a merciful person who can at least point out a helpful blog—particularly a Lutheran and well-written one—when the opportunity presents itself. 🙂

Type 1 Confessional

PS. Chris, if you see this, no Amazon author page? Maybe when things calm down for you! Meanwhile, you’re in our prayers.

  1. Thanks for the nod, Mary. And as far as an author’s page for Amazon… I’ve just never gotten around to it. I’ll get on it.
