The Relic Master

Hi. I don’t usually use my blog as a forum for general book recommendations. You know, I thought I might as well reserve the space for Lutherans. But I’m making an exception for this one: The Relic Master.

It seems like people either love it or hate it, even if they like other Christopher Buckley books.

I have zero reasons to think this guy is a Lutheran, but his novel based in Luther’s day was very enjoyable to  me! Were there bad jokes? Yes. Was there fornication and . . . too many phallic jokes? Yes. But no explicit sex scenes. Mostly bad language and “locker room talk.”

No, I’m not saying I approve of those things. But I could overlook them to follow a relatively pious relic hunter trying to serve two masters, one the pious Fredrick the Wise, one an impious power buying his way to the top. Meanwhile, what will Luther do the relic trade?! And what’s to be made with all the shrouds claiming to be Christs?!

Great historical fiction piece. Some seem to read it as though it’s satire. I didn’t strike me that way, but what do I know?

Yay for summer reading!

Happy reading & writing!
