Luther and Katharina

I’ve blogged several of Lutheran author Jody Hedlund‘s new releases, but she’s a new-to-me author. Today I’ll review her Christy Award-winning book, Luther and Katharina: A Novel of Love and Rebellion.

Luther and Katharina

I enjoyed reading this book. I thought there was a good breadth of history included, especially with the peasant uprisings. I appreciated the details and a lot of the overview. Additional plot lines kept things moving and humanized in the ways they should.

I’m not sure what is accurate about Katie Luther or not. Was she an herbalist with some medical training or not? I don’t know. So that’s sort of odd. Still, I found the writing nicely gripping.

I’ll be honest. I don’t think that either Katharina or Martin need to be portrayed as handsome. I still just can’t quite imagine Martin Luther in a swoony fashion, ha haa haaa, but while this wasn’t the intellectual love affair I’d expected, again, I enjoyed it.

It was hard to read some scenes. There’s abuse. I wouldn’t presume this is safe for young readers just because it’s Christian.
