Stirring Blood

I’ve just come home from a much needed vacation and it was great. Sleeping in a hotel last night, however, a compulsion came upon me. I needed to reread a certain set of books to stir my blood. “Stir my blood?!” That is not language I typically use, but maybe novels are precisely the remedy for certain times of unbalanced humors. Stirring blood to re-quicken the rest of me!

Ok, I don’t really believe in unbalanced humors in the historic sense. I think body, soul, and mind are more like a column that ought to line up than a cocktail of proportions congealing within. But maybe books are a key ingredient in a medicinal sense.

We all have ups and downs, highs and lows. We all have need of stimulation, catharsis, and encouragement. Maybe novels are a way God answers our prayers and those needs when our loved ones are busy elsewhere for a time.

I know this blog doesn’t have a lot of commenters, but if you’d enjoy a little back and forth: want to guess what series I started rereading? Or, what series might play such a role for you in moments of depleted (or rested) spirits? 🙂 I can already think of one other go-to series.

Stirring blood by novel: I’ll let you know how it goes. So far so good! 🙂 First book completed on my road trip home! And it feels good. It is a nice balance of rest and relaxation with stimulation, sympathy, and thankfulness.16
