I’ll admit that I’m married to a pastor and our Bible studies at church hinge on his personal research and due diligence. Still, he offered some great insight in yesterday’s class that got me thinking. I’ll offer a few suggestions but feel free to add your own for shared ideas for Old Testament Bible Studies.

Invisible Struggles
Another idea to share: this one on invisible struggles and theological considerations. Now, usually I’d sit on this one, because it has real appeal for me. Sadly, I’m just not writing. I need to focus on our kids—and the current lung plague sweeping through our house. People with invisible struggles are particularly likely to be overlooked and treated overly simply, even though the Church is particularly equipped to speak in love and understanding.

Verses for Religious Education
Another idea to share. Older educational practices would use poetry to help memorize things. You know, “In fourteen hundred ninety-two Columbus sailed the ocean blue.” There were verses for religious education, too, memorizing (and summarizing!) the books of the Bible and other content. Of course, Luther’s Small Catechism falls into that genre, too, in its beautiful German crafting. Still, why not put together a book of Lutheran texts and verses for religious education?

Repentance
Mondays seem to have lower readership, but I don’t want to sit on this idea. Writers, this is for you, but it’s also for CPH (and I’ll email this content to them directly!). Want to know a shared idea for a novel, writing contest, and maybe even series through CPH or other Lutheran publishing house? Repentance!
Discontent
Sometimes I think about writing about darker things: discontent, yearning, and suffering. Then I wonder who such writings would help and whether writing them would be a service.

The Garden of Eden
Some in this world believe fiction is better than reality. Isn’t that problematic for Christians in a number of ways? (Responding to that hypothesis could be another essay in the group project applying a theological understanding regarding fiction!) And, are we ready to leave the actual creativity of God’s beauty in this world out of the picture? Maybe I’m overly speculating, but let’s consider how beautiful the Garden of Eden may (easily) have been before the fall.

Shared Idea: Statistically Speaking
I’ve been having ideas for novels lately, so I’ll share one with you today. So often parents raise children so that the children assume and expect that they will escape negative statistics, mediocrity, or normalcy. I suggest a novel that explores a young woman’s struggle, realizing she is fitting into one statistic after another. To add a soul-searching element that could also help people with practical issues, the author could directly address a single mother bringing her out-of-wedlock child to a disappointed congregation.
