I find Bible study to be very provocative in a possible sense. It gets my juices flowing, seeing new connections to God’s mercy and fulfillments of prophecies. And, it just so happens that when your brain starts to work, sometimes it continues! Yay! I often find myself scribbling down notes and ideas in between Bible study and church as I ponder from that productive state of mind. What Bible study brought up today, however–in my mind at least, is whether I succumb to writing idolatry.

Happy New Year!
I wish you every blessing in Christ, for this year and all ages to come. (Can I hear a “Come, Lord Jesus?”) Happy New Year!

Lutheran Advent Reviewers?
Are there any Lutheran Advent reviewers among my readers? There is so much on the market–free or otherwise–designed to refocus our attention at this time of year. How can we know what’s good?

Review of Scrooge
Today I offer you a review of Scrooge and the Question of God’s Existence by Lutheran author Steve Luhring. It’s graced with a foreword from Dr. Paul Maier, himself, who boasts in both the premise and the delivery of this apologetic, philosophical yet fun to read novel.

Luther’d have trouble, too
Usually I pride myself on being a reasonable person. Sure, I kind of try to do it all–I aim for Superwoman. Still, yesterday I was very depressed about my project and trying to be a writer in general. My kind, calming husband pointed out that Luther’d have trouble, too, these days.

Fairy Rings
While I pray for rain in other parts of this country, we’ve had a lot of it around here. So much that mushrooms are popping up everywhere in a way I haven’t seen in the seven years I’ve lived here. 🙂 My dad made sure to point out the fairy rings to my girls.

My Brother Lives in Heaven
After my post looking for a good Lutheran children’s book dealing with small sibling loss, I got my hands on just that! A great big thanks to the Lutherans at According to Your Word for writing and selling it! (You may be familiar with them for their free resources for catechism, worship, and the liturgy). Titled My Brother Lives with Jesus by Anna & Samuel Gullixson, I review it below.

When I pursued my MA in theology at Concordia Theological Seminary, sometimes I’d get annoyed at all the non-Lutheran books we were reading. I wanted to read all the good stuff before I had to discern other lenses. I’ve learned a few things since then. First, a person needs to discern no matter who the publisher is. Second, some people look down on books from outside Lutheran publishing no matter what. Lutherans can be so “Lutheran-focused” that good stuff can slip right by.
Small Sibling Loss
Edit: A Lutheran book has just been published! I’ll review it as soon as my copy arrives! Woo hoo!
There has not been a recent death in my family, but I’m curious about finding good resources. Do any of you have any book recommendations to help little ones with the loss of an infant brother/sister? Due to miscarriage or anything else? You know, small sibling loss? Below are a few suggestions from a deaconess friend, but we haven’t found one from a solid Lutheran perspective yet.

Provincial Life
The Disney character Belle is supposed to be great: a clever girl, beautiful inside and out. Whatever. I hate neither her nor her story. But actually thinking about her a second, since I just started watching the live action movie for the first time, what’s her existential problem?! Provincial life?!
